The creators of Forza Motorsport 6 referred to it as the game they always wanted to make. It was also a series of significant anniversaries: It was the 10 year anniversary of Turn 10 (Forza's parent studio), the 40th anniversary of racing games, and the 50th anniversary of Ford GT's win at Le Mans (The 2017 Ford GT was the hero car for the game). To celebrate all of this we created a story of the Ford GT traveling through the history of racing games, before finally arriving at its final destination, Forza Motorsport 7.
This was a really fun project: a project that lived or died on the details. We started by licensing the rights to some pivotal classic racing games, then really dove in deep to identify the iconic characteristics of each game.
The only 2017 Ford GT that existed was a concept car that would not go over 30mph. So out of necessity we shot the car live on a giant motion controller, then built out 3d realizations of each of the classic driving game worlds, placing our real car into each environment.
